The holiday season has arrived at the Sandy Cove Inn, and we have decorated the motel for your enjoyment. We and our little helper, Bingo, have hung wreaths, placed a Christmas tree in the lobby, set up lights on the railing and even added holiday décor to some of the rooms and vacation rentals. Dips, Bumps and Squiggles

Recently Mike and I took the girls to the beach in search of tiny sand dollars. Did you know you can find sand dollars smaller than than a pencil eraser? In our search, we met up with a local who told us all about tiny sand dollars, olive shells and seaweed. This friendly woman also told us what the different designs in the sand meant.

Next time you visit, look down at the sand and you’ll notice dips and bumps and squiggles. Underneath these funny marks in the sand you’ll find a sand crabs, olive shells and razor clams.

One of my favorite things about our beach walks is meeting up with people who have lived in Seaside for decades. They know so many secrets about the way the ocean and its critters work. Fascinating!

I am beyond excited to publish this post. Why? Because a new restaurant has come to town! We finally have an excellent breakfast spot to send you to when you visit. The Firehouse Cafe recently opened (right next to my favorite dinner restaurant Yummy). The decor is minimal but cheerful, the staff are delightful and knowledgeable, the owners are friendly and the food is fantastic – simple, fresh, delicious – what more could you ask for?

I’ve started getting into running. Hard to believe as I always swore I was definitely not a runner. Well, things change I suppose. And thanks to my new interest I’m excited to share that this year the Sandcastle Day & Festival has added a new item to the weekend’s activity – a 5k Fun Walk/Run. It’s just $10 to participate. I’ll be there and I’d love for you to join me!

Every Spring the members of the Cannon Beach Gallery Group look forward to the weekend when they unveil the newest work by their featured artists.

This has become one of the most anticipated annual arts events in Oregon, because it gives the art lover an opportunity to meet the artists, watch many of them at work, attend the receptions, enjoy a wide variety of food and music…and take in everything this postcard-perfect town, nestled between the wild Pacific Ocean and the coastal mountains, has to offer.

Chefs from designated Cannon Beach restaurants have been inspired to create a special “Spring Unveiling” weekend addition to their menu, based upon a work of art they have selected from our galleries. -CB Gallery Group

Oregon SOLVE Spring Beach Clean Up

Mike and the girls participated in this year’s SOLVE Spring Oregon Beach Clean Up. It was pouring down rain but that’s just a fun excuse to put our rain gear to good use, right? Lots of people showed up, everyone picked up tons of garbage and the girls came home soaked but happy to participate. And guess what? The sun came out as soon as everyone got home – a well-earned “thank you” from the Sun himself!

We appreciate being a part of a community that cares so much about our environment. I feel challenged to become more aware of my surroundings and am inspired to do my part in honoring this beautiful location we live in. I won’t just wait for the SOLVE Clean Up event but will start practicing good stewardship every time we walk to the beach. A garbage bag is something I should carry around with me all the time.

Thanks to everyone who showed up and participated this year!

Every year the daffodils surprise me with their springy cheer – and every year I am so glad to have survived another coastal winter (although this one was a breeze compared to past winters). Spring is everywhere in Seaside right now. Spring-break families, blossoms on trees, flowering bulbs and lots of sun.
